The best bits

Wonderful news for Fiona Lamptey, an alumna of the LFS Fast Forward Producing programme held in 2012, named the new Director of UK Features at Netflix.

Huge congratulations to MA Filmmaking (MAF 173) graduate Colum Eastwood, named a Star of Tomorrow for 2020 by Screen Daily.

Two very recent MAF (192) graduates, Paul Maziere and Tamas Apor Meder, were nominated for the British Society of Cinematographers Short Film Cinematography Competition - Tamas was announced as the Student Winner for his work on Summer Shade (wri/dir. Shira Haimovici, co-produced by Adam Robinson)!

Students and recent graduates have worked on a new project with Senior Lecturer in Production Design, Matthew Button. The Sky Original comedy Bloods will be released next year.

Great news from this year’s digital edition of the Encounters Film Festival:

  • Filipiñana (dir. Rafael Manuel, prod. Naomi-Poltier Mutal, DoP. Xenia Patricia, prod. design Andrea Vigoni) was awarded the Brief Encounters Grand Prix for 2020.
  • Shoegazing (dir. Servane D’Alverny, prod. Julien Cornwall, DoP. Tamas Apor Meder, prod. design Molly Shears) took home the Creative Filmmaking Award from the NAHEMI @ Encounters selection.

Graduation Films

Graduation film Summer Shade (dir. Shira Haimovici, DoP. Tamas Apor Meder) has been selected for Camerimage 2020 in the Student Etudes Competition.

Also selected for Camerimage, in the Student Etudes Panorama Competition, are graduation films My Mum’s Letters (wri/dir Antonio Sequeira, DoP Anastasiia Vorotniuk, co-prod. Julien Cornwall, prod. design Shira Haimovici) and Empty Spaces (wri/dir Clara Stephanie Schieber Lorenesi, DoP. Juri Ferri, ed. Anne Madeleine Mancosu).

My Mum’s Letters — wri/dir Antonio Sequeira, DoP Anastasiia Vorotniuk

Filipiñana also recently won the Best International Short Film Award at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma de Montréal.

The Lost Scot screened at the Sehsuchte International Student Film Festival
and won the Best Short Fiction Film Prize.

Screening at the HollyShorts Film Festival in November are the following graduation films:

  • My Other Suit is Human (dir. Andrew Montague, DoP. Zeta Spyraki, prod. design Rocio Rivera Rosado, prod. manager Adam Robinson, sound Franco Volpi)
  • Chi Chi (dir. Chelsey D’Adesky, DoP. Eng Teck Ng, AD. Nailah Robinson)

Caravan is also headed to the LA Shorts Film Festival in October, and Chi Chi will make its way further across the US at the Nashville Film Festival, St Louis Film Festival, and Firstglance Film Festival

My Other Suit is Human also took home the Best Student Short Film Award at the Kerry International Film Festival.

Rahul Sharma’s (MAF 191) graduation film The Binoculars (prod. Scott Trotter, DoP. Tamas Apor Meder, ed. Nic Compall, prod. design Shira Haimovici) will screen at the Yerevan International Short Film Festival and the University of Winnipeg Student Film Festival.

Eliot Gelberg-Wilson’s (MAF 192) graduation film Moshe and Amira (prod. Julien Cornwall, DoP. Tamas Apor Meder, prod. design Molly Shears, art dir. Nadjana Panto) has been selected for the UK Jewish Film Festival and will screen on the 9th November. It recently screened as part of the Bolton Film Festival.

Other alumni successes

MAF 186 graduate Lara Zeidan has been selected for the Crossroads Co-production Forum with her first feature project Birthday. She will also be taking part in the Emerging20 Program of the Reelworld Film Festival.

Some recent LFS graduates have been working on a new project: a horror short film called For Sale. Written and directed by Francesco Gabriele (MAF 182), with cinematography by Giacomo La Monaca (MAF 163) and Alex Grigoras (MAF 171) as the colourist, the film will enjoy screenings at the Highlands Film Fest, Hex After Dark Film Festival, East Van Showcase, Ramaskrik Film Festival, and the Dark Hedges Film Festival.

Emily Harris (DF141) has a new feature film, Carmilla, out in cinemas this week, which received a 4-star review from The Observer.

Sonia Liza Kenterman (MAF 170) has been selected for the PÖFF Film Festival in the First Feature Films Competition with Tailor.

Also screening at PÖFF will be MAF 185 alumna Remi Itani’s latest short film Drought, which will also be part of the competition at the Winterthur International Short Film Festival.

Alumnus John Walsh from course DF107 has written a new book, Flash Gordon: The Official Story of the Film, due to be published by Titan Books on the 20th November.
