Highlights

Alumna Ana Rocha de Sousa’s (MAF 173) Venice Biennale-award winning debut feature Listen has been selected as Portugal’s International Oscar selection for 2021.

Alumnus Alvaro Gago’s (MAF 175) short film 16 de Decembro has been selected to compete in the Short Film category of the 35th Goya Awards.

Huge congratulations to MA Screenwriting alumna Kefi Chadwick (MAS 7), longlisted in the British Independent Film Awards Best Debut Screenwriter category for her work on Looted, which has picked up strong reviews all round, including 4 stars from The Guardian.

Longlisted in the BIFA Short Film category are two LFS graduation films, Summer Shade (dir. Shira Haimovici, DoP. Tamas Apor Meder, co-prod. Adam Robinson) and Filipiñana (dir. Rafael Manuel, prod. Naomi Pacifique, DoP. Xenia Patricia, prod. design Andrea Vigoni).

Alumna Dornaz Hajiha (MAF 180) won the Torino Film Lab Production Award for her project Diaphanous.

LFS alumnus and documentary filmmaker Ian Bonhôte’s (DF 135) latest film, Rising Phoenix, has been nominated for two Critics Choice Awards including Best Sports Documentary.

Graduation Films

Filipiñana (dir. Rafael Manuel, prod. Naomi Pacifique, DoP. Xenia Patricia, prod. design Andrea Vigoni) will compete in the UK selection of the London Short Film Festival 2021 and received an honourable mention from the jury at the FilmSchoolFest Munich.

Also screening at LSFF next January will be graduation film Calladita, written and directed by Miguel Faus (MAF 192).

Great news for Juan Felipe Balcazar’s (MAF 190) graduation film Downbound Wayfarer which has been selected to screen at the 38th Torino Film Festival.

Juri Ferri’s (MAF 191) graduation film Meidagen (DoP. Clara Stephanie Schieber Lorenesi, AD. Vasco de Oliveira, ed. Marijn Maas) will be part of the Festival 1666 in Rio de Janeiro this month.

Congratulations to Vasco de Oliveira (MAF 193) and the team behind graduation film The Cow of Fire (prod. Rocio Rivera Rosado, DoP. Anthony Hughes) — the film will screen at the Festival Caminhos do Cinema Português.

Grad film We Choose To Go (dir. Marlene Rios, DoP. Hsien Niu, prod. design Emily Marquet, ed. Razvan Barseti) has been selected for the San Francisco Latino Film Festival 2020.

Graduation film My Other Suit is Human (dir. Andrew Montague, DoP. Zeta Spyraki, prod. design Rocio Rivera Rosado, prod. manager Adam Robinson, sound Franco Volpi) won the Best Student Film award at the Hamilton Film Festival.

Alumni Success

Our alumni screening at LSFF next January include Remi Itani with Drought, Theo James Krekis with Memoirs of a Freezer, Andrea Niada with The Stork, and Jacqueline Lentzou with The End of Suffering (A Proposal).

MAS alumna Tamara Vogl (MAS 0918) was named the Best Feature Film Screenplay Winner at the Evolution Film Festival Mallorca for her script Tau Emerald.

Sonia Liza Kenterman’s (MAF 170) debut feature Tailor won three awards at the Thessaloniki Film Festival — Fipresci Prize for a Greek Film, ERT Award for a Greek Film, and the Youth Jury Award.

Also at Thessaloniki, alumna Lara Zeidan (MAF 186) took home the CNC Script Development Award at the Crossroads Co-Production Forum for her feature script Birthday and was featured in a new Variety article.

Kyla Simone Bruce (MAF 173) will sit on the jury for the 2020 London Film Week.

Andrea Niada (MAF 182) has reached the quarter finals of the Final Draft Big Break Screenwriting Contest with his horror TV series script All the Various Cataclysms.

Jessica Romagnoli (MAS 10) and Patrick William Ireland (MAF 183) have reached the semi-finals of the 2021 ScreenCraft TV Pilot Competition with their script Lady Charon.
